Ross Greene’s passion for World War II and determination to share his uncle’s inspiring story led to the extensive research required to write this book. With a background in engineering\, he founded a financial consulting firm\, beginning his now more than forty-year investment career. \nA Fortress and a Legacy represents his gift not only to his cousin—the daughter his uncle never knew— but to all those who share his appreciation for those who sacrificed for the cause of freedom. \nRoss and his wife Lynne\, who have three children and eight grandchildren\, make their home near Atlanta\, Georgia.

SUMMARY:Mighty Talks at the Mighty Eighth
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force’s monthly Mighty Talk series continues with One Pilot’s Story: From Pittsburg to the Ardennes\, presented by Bruce Halley. This program will take place on August 26th at 11:00 am at the museum. \nThe program is free to the public\, but please register at https://forms.gle/RpZKBZ2HCT3PNMMN9 \nOptional Lunch: Join us for an optional lunch afterwards. $10/12 cash/credit for members or $15/17cash/credit for non-members. \nAbout the Presentation\nWhen he graduated high school in May 1941\, Raymond Ankeny – like many young men at that time – planned to enroll in college\, graduate\, get a job and start a family. All these plans were put on hold when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7\, 1941.  Raymond enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in early 1942 and was called up in 1943. After a series of stations and training programs he earned his wings as a multi-engine pilot and was assigned to fly heavy bombers. His crew deployed to the 8th Airforce in England in late 1944 and began flying bombing missions in B-17s in January 1945. \nOn their 21st mission they were shot down and the plane crashed south of Dresden Germany. The remains of the crew were eventually located and were relocated for identification at the Ardennes American Military Cemetery in Belgium\, where he was buried in his final resting place in 1948. \nThis presentation will provide a review of his life prior to being called into service\, snapshots of his training to become a pilot\, life on the base in England\, a review of his missions during the war\, and some of their reflections about these missions.  We will provide an in-depth review of this crew’s final mission and the individual crew member outcomes\, focusing on the 6 members who died that day. Finally\, we will review the sequence of events surrounding their eventual recovery\, identification and burial\, and the research effort to assemble this story. \nAbout the Presenter\nBruce Halley is a dedicated researcher and family advocate committed to preserving the stories of World War II airmen. His work focuses on documenting the combat service and final missions of Eighth Air Force personnel\, particularly those who served with the 490th Bomb Group. Through extensive research and collaboration with veterans’ families\, Halley helps ensure that the sacrifices and experiences of these airmen are remembered and shared with future generations.

This program will take place on September 19th at 11:00 am at the museum. \nThe program is free to the public\, but please register at https://forms.gle/tgvzSssChA5XyVfx8 \nAbout the Book\nThe Japanese captain ominously declared\, “You will all die here.” His words carried the chilling certainty of the enemy—an enemy the American and Filipino captives had come to know and fear as they were forced to march through the unforgiving terrain of the Bataan Peninsula. Still\, in the midst of their suffering—starving\, dehydrated\, and exhausted—they clung to the hope that survival was possible. They had already endured the unimaginable horrors of the infamous Bataan Death March\, witnessing the brutality of the Japanese guards who bayonetted\, shot\, beheaded\, or buried alive any soldier who fell behind. But more terror awaited them in the camps where disease\, starvation\, thirst\, and death seemed to wait for them around every corner\, day and night. \nSuch was J. C. Pardue’s nightmare. In Telling His Story: POW #1000\, Dr. Janis Pardue Hill\, as primarily a compiler and editor\, provides the details of his story\, from his entry into the US Army Air Corps through his WWII experiences in the Philippines. Most prominent among her father’s memories was the miracle of his Bible. Surviving a direct hit from a fragmentation bomb\, confiscation in a POW camp\, and disposal on a Hell Ship\, that Bible always returned. His most treasured possession—his Bible\, the weapon he considered the most valuable of all\, came home with POW #1000. \nAbout the Author\nDr. Janis Pardue Hill\, the daughter of J.C. Pardue\, masterfully compiles her father’s harrowing experiences into a moving narrative. Through her words\, she brings history to life and honors her father’s incredible legacy of faith and perseverance. \nDr. Pardue Hill is a retired university professor and lifelong educator\, holds a BS in English education\, an MA in literature\, and a PhD in Curriculum Theory. She has worked in secondary and university classrooms\, as a Program Coordinator in the LA Department of Education\, and as a Curriculum Coordinator in the Ouachita Parish School System. Dr. Hill and her husband\, Charles A. Hill\, Jr.\, have two children\, a son-in-law\, and three grandchildren and live in North Louisiana.

SUMMARY:Wreaths Across America 2026 at Andersonville National Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Each December\, Andersonville National Historic Site participates in the Wreaths Across America program as a special way to honor and remember the sacrifice of military service members during the holiday season. Wreaths sponsored through the nonprofit Wreaths Across America organization are delivered to and placed on gravesites in national cemeteries across the country\, including Andersonville National Cemetery. Sponsored wreaths can be designated for placement on the specific grave of a loved one\, or left undesignated and placed on one of thousands of gravesites that otherwise may not be visited or honored. \nWith the invaluable help and support of Bennett International\, the Taylor Family Foundation\, Wreaths Across America\, Friends of Andersonville\, the American Ex-Prisoners of War\, and other partners\, thousands of wreaths are brought to Andersonville National Cemetery each year. Our shared goal is to honor each of the over 20\,000 gravesites in the cemetery with a wreath. \n2026 Event Information\nThe main event will take place at 12:00 pm on Saturday\, December 13\, in Andersonville National Cemetery. Volunteers can either bring the completed registration form below with them or arrive at 9:30 am to register. \nThe public is invited to attend a small ceremony to be held at the Rostrum at 12:00 pm\, when wreaths honoring each branch of military service will be presented. Limited seating will be available. Immediately following the ceremony\, the public will be invited to help place wreaths on graves in Andersonville National Cemetery as a way to honor and remember those who served our country. \nFor more information\, call the park at 229-924-0343 ext 1 or email the park at ande_information@nps.gov.
