SUMMARY:Mighty Talk | The Navigator's Letter with Jan Cress Dondi
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force’s monthly Mighty Talk series is proud to present author Jan Cress Dondi\, who will be discussing her bestselling book The Navigator’s Letter. This program will take place on May 24th at 1:00 pm at the museum as part of the Flags for the Fallen weekend programming. \nThe program is free to the public\, but please register at https://forms.gle/7qBGm5TYxBqLud7w8 \nAbout the Book\nA USA Today Bestseller\, The Navigator’s Letter reveals one of the most audacious and overlooked World War II stories. It chronicles a dangerous U.S. Army Air Force campaign through the voices of two airmen bound by duty—and one woman\, forming a deeply human narrative. A gripping blend of military history and war biography\, it captures brotherhood\, love\, and sacrifice. \nOne of the riskiest air raids of World War II occurred on August 1\, 1943\, over the oil fields at Ploesti\, Romania—Nazi Germany’s primary fuel source. The Allies believed that the destruction of Hitler’s oil refineries would shorten the war. Using an untested strategy\, it was worth the gamble\, but the mission did not go according to plan—with 53 aircraft and 532 crewmen lost\, it was the costliest US air raid of the war. \nA true story\, The Navigator’s Letter is a tale of uncanny coincidences: two friends from the same small Illinois town; both joined the Air Corps; both became navigators; both were assigned to B-24 Liberators; both flew missions over Europe; both of their planes were forced down over Ploesti; and both went missing-in-action. \nIntertwined with events of WWII\, the story follows the two B-24 navigators coursing through wartime\, both with ties to the same woman. Their lives unfurl with the Air Force’s darkest day\, Operation Tidal Wave. It was the first-ever zero-altitude air raid followed by multiple high-altitude raids culminating in Operation Reunion\, the largest evacuation by air in history with the Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group flying escort repatriating 1\,162 POWs from Romania back to American air bases in Italy. \nAbout the Author\nJan Cress Dondi has a BS from the University of Georgia\, conducted post-graduate studies at the University of Alaska\, and has done research and legal writing for decades. She lives in Fort Lauderdale\, Florida.

SUMMARY:Mighty Talk | Life of the 381st Bomb Group
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force’s monthly Mighty Talk series is proud to present editor Bob Korkuc\, who will be discussing his book Life of the 381st Bomb Group: The World War II Diary of Eighth Air Force Chaplain James Good Brown. This program will take place on May 24th at 2:30 pm at the museum as part of the Flags for the Fallen weekend programming.\n\nThe program is free to the public\, but please register at https://forms.gle/2iU4oTGC1Jg3vYjy5\n\nAbout the BookWhile working on his first book\, Bob Korkuc became intimately familiar with the 381st Bombardment Group of the Mighty Eighth Air Force and met the group’s chaplain\, James Good Brown. Brown kept a diary during his time with the bomb group (1943 to 1945) in which he chronicled the daily experiences of the men.Years after the war\, Brown self-published his diary\, which today is hard to find. Through his friendship with Brown\, Korkuc gained access to and chose to edit the original document so that more readers might appreciate this insightful wartime eyewitness account.\n\nServing in his early forties alongside men twenty years his junior—whom he called the “Mighty Men of the 381st”—Brown took part in morning briefings\, shared meals with crews\, and anxiously awaited their return from dangerous daylight bombing missions. Flying as a noncombatant\, an unnecessary eleventh crewmember\, Brown describes his own observations of a Flying Fortress combat mission over Germany. Writing with extraordinary candor\, Brown documents the inner workings of a bomb group that flew 297 combat missions over Europe\, providing vivid character assessments of his fellow airmen and capturing both their victories and devastating losses.\nIn addition to judiciously editing Brown’s original diary for readability\, Korkuc created a unique appendix\, which reveals the fate of every airman who served with Brown. The immediacy of Brown’s narration combined with Korkuc’s meticulous editing make this a promising new resource for scholars and general readers alike.\n\nAbout the AuthorBob Korkuc is an electrical engineer and the author of Finding a Fallen Hero: The Death of a Ball Turret Gunner. During the research and writing of this book\, Korkuc became a student of the 381st Bomb Group and was privileged to learn about their exploits during World War II.

SUMMARY:Wreaths Across America 2026 at Andersonville National Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Each December\, Andersonville National Historic Site participates in the Wreaths Across America program as a special way to honor and remember the sacrifice of military service members during the holiday season. Wreaths sponsored through the nonprofit Wreaths Across America organization are delivered to and placed on gravesites in national cemeteries across the country\, including Andersonville National Cemetery. Sponsored wreaths can be designated for placement on the specific grave of a loved one\, or left undesignated and placed on one of thousands of gravesites that otherwise may not be visited or honored. \nWith the invaluable help and support of Bennett International\, the Taylor Family Foundation\, Wreaths Across America\, Friends of Andersonville\, the American Ex-Prisoners of War\, and other partners\, thousands of wreaths are brought to Andersonville National Cemetery each year. Our shared goal is to honor each of the over 20\,000 gravesites in the cemetery with a wreath. \n2026 Event Information\nThe main event will take place at 12:00 pm on Saturday\, December 13\, in Andersonville National Cemetery. Volunteers can either bring the completed registration form below with them or arrive at 9:30 am to register. \nThe public is invited to attend a small ceremony to be held at the Rostrum at 12:00 pm\, when wreaths honoring each branch of military service will be presented. Limited seating will be available. Immediately following the ceremony\, the public will be invited to help place wreaths on graves in Andersonville National Cemetery as a way to honor and remember those who served our country. \nFor more information\, call the park at 229-924-0343 ext 1 or email the park at ande_information@nps.gov.
