As Americans celebrate Independence Day and commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, the Georgia World War II Heritage Trail joins communities across Georgia in reflecting on the ideals of liberty, service, and sacrifice that have defined the American experience for two and a half centuries.
The Declaration of Independence established the principles upon which the United States was founded. During World War II, millions of Americans—including countless Georgians—answered the call to defend those principles at home and abroad. Their courage, determination, and shared commitment to freedom helped secure victory in one of history’s defining conflicts and preserved the liberties first proclaimed in 1776.
The Georgia World War II Heritage Trail exists to preserve and share these stories. Through museums, historic sites, memorials, archives, and community organizations across the state, the Trail connects visitors with the places and people that shaped Georgia’s remarkable contributions to the World War II home front and the global war effort.
As America250 commemorations continue throughout 2026, the Trail encourages residents and visitors alike to explore Georgia’s rich World War II heritage. Every visit to a Trail partner offers an opportunity to learn about the citizens who served in uniform, supported the war effort on the home front, advanced aviation and industry, trained Allied forces, and helped secure the freedoms we continue to enjoy today.
