On June 6, 2025 – 81 years to the day since the D-Day invasion—a new memorial was unveiled at the historic La Fière Bridge Memorial Site in Normandy to honor the heroic Airmen of the Eighth Air Force. These men, who fought and fell in the boundless skies over Europe during World War II, were finally given a tribute worthy of their courage and sacrifice. With no battlefield to stand upon and no shelter from the enemy, they faced unimaginable peril thousands of feet above the ground. Their unwavering bravery helped shape the outcome of the war, and now, at last, they are eternally remembered in a place that bears the weight of history. The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force proudly assisted in the development of the memorial’s statues, providing historic photographs from its collection to guide the sculptor in capturing the likeness and spirit of these valiant Airmen.
