Two Georgia World War II Heritage Trail partners, Currahee Military Museum and Camp Toccoa at Currahee, are joining the Toccoa community for the 22nd Annual Currahee Military Weekend. From October 1 through 4, visitors can explore the places and stories that connect this Georgia town to the history of America’s World War II paratroopers.
The partnership gives visitors a chance to follow that story across two sites. At the Currahee Military Museum, located in Toccoa’s historic train depot, exhibits tell the story of the soldiers who arrived in town before beginning their training. At Camp Toccoa at Currahee, visitors can walk the grounds where those men trained and reflect on the demands they faced before going overseas.
Throughout the weekend, tours, speakers, a race, and community events will bring the Airborne legacy to life. Activities begin Thursday, October 1, with tours of both Trail sites. That evening, “Movie in the Vines” at Currahee Vineyard and Winery features a free outdoor screening of “Currahee,” the first episode of Band of Brothers, at 7:30 p.m. Visitors should bring a chair or blanket.
On Saturday, October 3, the Currahee Challenge 5K and 10K begins at 8 a.m. at Currahee Mountain, recalling the mountain run that became a defining part of the paratroopers’ training. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can tour the museum and camp and enjoy the Currahee Heroes and Heritage Festival in downtown Toccoa. Volunteer guides, historians, military experts, and veterans will help share the area’s history.
Saturday evening’s “Dinner Under the Stars: A Salute to America and the Legacy of the Airborne” begins at 6:30 p.m. at Currahee Vineyards. The ticketed event features a fireside chat with retired Col. Cole Kingseed, historian and author of Conversations with Major Dick Winters.
Currahee Military Weekend shows what visitors can discover when they experience these two Trail partners together. The museum preserves the accounts and artifacts of the men who trained at Toccoa; the camp places visitors on the ground where that training took place. Together, they help carry Georgia’s WWII Airborne story forward.
